Q&A #2 Why are a few of my Shellac clients peeling?
Q: Why is Shellac peeling on some of my clients?
A: Proper Preparation, Application, Curing, Home Maintenance
1. Preparation
- The first step is to make sure you are doing proper P.E.P.
P.E.P. includes
- P-erform Mini Manicure = Removing the Cuticle off the nail plate
- E-liminate Surface Contaminants = ScrubFresh
- P-Purify Nail Plate = ScrubFresh
Note: If your client experiences natural nail delamination (peeling)…
Lightly buff the area with a 240 grit or higher buffer. If there is excessive delamination discontinue the service until the nail grow out (thus avoiding damaging the natural nail with too much buffing).
“Please refer to the Shellac Step-by-Step directions for detailed P.E.P., application and removal techniques”
2. Application - Thin is best!!!
- SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE the bottle of Shellac
- With each layer of Shellac, apply it thin.
- Keep a tiny free margin around the cuticle and sidewall areas.
- Cap the extension edge with each layer of Shellac
3. Curing
- Stick with the system - Use the CND UV Lamp
- Cure each layer
- Base Coat = 10 sec
- Color Coat = 2 min
- Top Coat = 2 min
4. Home Maintenance
- Solar Oil -Keeps natural nails, nail color and nail enhancements tough and flexible. Use daily!

What color do you recommend using for an American manicure?
Do you have your clients wash their hands after shellac removal?
CND says:
January 24th, 2012 at 5:46 am
Everyone has a personal preference on colors and the definition of an American manicure. Try Studio White for a softer white and play around with the pinks according to client skin tone. You can learn more by attending a CND Master Painter course.

I have the entire Shellac system (base, color and top coat as well as the UV Lamp). I followed the instructions but for some reason the top coat is not drying at all. I was sure to shake all the bottles before use. The top coat came out very sticky and not dry at all.

I was wondering what the process is for a pedicure with shellac. When doing a shellac manicure I do not soak in water is that the same with a pedicure??
CND says:
January 30th, 2012 at 5:35 pm
For a pedicure you can soak the feet for 3-5 minutes then do your cuticle work, shaping, ScrubFresh, Shellac, and follow with the rest of the pedicure service – scrubs, masques, paraffin, lotion, etc.

I have had the polish “repel” away from a couple of clients’ cuticle and tip. I follow the exact procedure on everybody, and am very careful to cleanse the nail plate completely with the alcohol. This has only happened a few times. No matter how many times I paint the nail, the polish “draws up ” to the center. What could be causing this???
CND says:
March 7th, 2012 at 7:34 pm
Make sure you are shaking the Shellac thoroughly and scrubbing the entire nail plate at the end and on the sides with ScrubFresh.

CND

Make sure you are sealing the edge of the nails during application of each layer as well as getting all the edges of the color sealed with top coat.

Can the CND Shellac be cured with LED lights vs UV lights? I have customers with concerns using UV. I understand the system calls for UV, but will the LED work and is there a difference in curing time? The idea of LED doesn’t seem to bother them. Thanks!
CND says:
March 7th, 2012 at 7:38 pm
Shellac is not formulated to be cured in a LED light. You might consider making sure they are aware that LED bulbs also put out UV they are just putting out a more specific spectrum of UV.

We do spa manicures using the CND system. Do you recommend doing a mini mani then shellac, then use The almond system? I’ve found if you do the almond system before shellac that it’s hard to get all of the oils off of the nail plate. Or do you recommend not using the almond mani system at all when shellac polishing?
CND says:
March 7th, 2012 at 7:40 pm
Do cuticle work, shaping, ScrubFresh, Shellac, then follow up with your spa steps.

Do you have to put 2 coats of the colour on? Did all prep everything right but only put 1 coat of colour on my mum and they lifted the next day?? So just wondering if it was because I only did 1 coat of the colour, thanks
CND says:
April 17th, 2012 at 12:09 pm
It is just fine to do one layer of color or even just top and base. Make sure the Shellac is getting a proper cure – CND UV lamp is used, hand all the way in, all 4 bulbs come on, etc. Also be sure that you scrubbed the entire nail with ScrubFresh not just up and down the center. Each layer of Shellac needs to be thin as well as seal the end.
Hope this helps,
CND

I’ve had shellac for 2 months straight now (every 2 weeks) and my nails are peeling from the tip up. I had my nail tech remove the polish yesterday and my nails look absolutely awful. I don’t know what procedures she is or isn’t using. What can I do to fix them? I’m really disappointed. LOVED the shellac. But my nails look ruined. They were healthy and long before this.

Make sure to use Solar Oil 2-3 time daily, it is a conditioner for the nails that should be used whether the nails are naked or covered in Shellac, polish, etc. Peeling the Shellac off can cause damage to the nails so be sure not to peel, no buffing is needed to apply or remove Shellac. Removal should be done in a wrapping method, not by soaking in a bowl of acetone.

Could a client experience peeling of Shellac if having their hands in Water i.e peeling a large amount of shrimp…That took over 2 hours? They did this immediately after leaving salon, and experienced peeling later that evening. I followed proper prep and application capping free edges..
CND says:

When the nails are soaking in water or other chemicals they absorb as much as they can which causes them to expand. The nails then separate from the coating on them which allows it to be picked, knocked, or peeled easily. Several hours later when the nail returns to normal size from drying back out, the coating may still come off since the edges can remain unattached. It is a good idea to wear gloves when hands will be submerged!
