Love the new colors!!!! Was suprised to see some of the lighter shades didn’t match the outer bottle color, just decided it was close enough and because the bottles can not have light penetrate or it will harden the Shellac. Clients don’t mind once you explain this and show them the true color on a test pallet. Wow!! The Purple Royal has been a huge hit this week.

Katie,
You are right the bottles need to be opaque to keep the light out. Here are some layering ideas using the new colors to get you started if you are interested:

I just layered the R Royalty with negligee over top. Very pretty and wild!! I wasn’t all that thrilled with the new color selections. I kinda feel there are to many light pinks. ( negligee, beau, and clearly pink which is a total clear polish with a red tint to it ? ) I’m not sure why CND would choose a color like that since we don’t have many color choices?. I did use clearly pink with the glitter mother of pearl and that was really clear and nice.
Does anyone know if there is a color wheel we could buy with all the colors and layering color possibilities, so that we can actually see all the combos? The mani-q product out has a color wheel so I’m kinda jealous…:)
Holly L Schippers says:

The Clearly Pink is really handy for clients like nurses or interpreters that can’t wear color, it just gives the nails a healthy gloss look, kinda like lipgloss for the nails! It is also a fab base color for Rockstar Toes. If you are interested, there are some photos of several of the combinations, with 24 colora you can create hundreds of combinations so a color wheel would be a challenge! Here are some layers to get you started on ideas:

CND says:

Candi,
Layering is dependent on the final color. With most dark colors as a base, typically it is applied in 2 layers to achieve full coverage prior to layering. Hope this helps.

I tried layering Fedora and Romantique today. I followed the instructions exactly, but wasn’t happy with the result. Could it be because I didn’t apply a thin enough layer of Fedora? It looked nothing like the picture I saw, so I ended up removing it and just doing Fedora. Maybe I need to try more on models, but I wouldn’t charge a client for layering just yet.
Holly L Schippers says:

Emily,
Some of the layered colors have a textured look to them and that is one. Make sure your colors are well shaken, try it with 2 coats of Fedora instead of one, and apply the Romantique with gentle strokes. Layering is covered in this troubleshooting video if that would help:

loving all the layering options you have been sharing. I made 36 layering color samples from the choices you displayed on the web and my customers are loving the additional color choices. with the 24 shellac colors and the layering with the first 12 colors I now have 60 choices. Now I see that there are many new layering options using the 12 new colors. It takes o much product to make these samples and to print copies off the web does not reflect good color samples. any chance that you will be providing color charts with all the layering options? After the initial release of the first 12 colors I did print a layering color sheet off the web that was pretty accurate. I would be willing to pay for a color layering chart on a nice laminated card as I am sure other nail techs would..would love to hear your thoughts. thanks

LOVE Shellac! Any thought to incorporating nail art? Can jem stones be added before final top coat? What about providing some colors with thin brushes? Also, it seems that it would be worth your time and money to offer nail samples and / or color wheels or charts for purchase. The more options the public sees and are comfortable with, the more clients are going to want to Shellac!

Have had horrible time with shellac..Drying up too quickly and can’t even spread it.. have been told by distributors as well as CND ees the following: Keep in dark, keep upside down, stir with stick, warm under light to thin, all this as well as shake, shake..etc. I’ve been doing nails for 28 years and never had such an unfriendly user product..andhave lost 4 clients….have switched to Gelish which comes in bigger bottle plus same price..much better results..wonder if you’ll publish this…

Vicki,
I’m sorry your Shellac experience has not been optimal, when you say it dries quickly and you can’t spread it, that leads me to wonder if you have a table lamp that you keep pretty close to your work area which may be partially polymerizing the Shellac as you are trying to use it. Some of the things you have been told are also unfortunately mis-information such as warming the Shellac which leads to faster thickening. If you decide to have another go at Shellac or even just use up what you have, please be sure to check out the helpful videos at cnd.com as well as youtube.com/fingernailfixer

Hi, I tried to use cream puff today as my base layer but when applying, it was extremely stripy and little holes formed. Any idea what could have caused this? I tried to put it on as thin as possible but our white is quiet thick, even after shaking real hard!!
CND says:
June 12th, 2011 at 7:34 pm
Mel,
That almost sounds like the possibility of moisture, be sure to scrub the entire nail with ScrubFresh and apply the base coat as carefully as you would a red.

Hi I just wanted to say I love love love shellac and so do my clients thank you for inventing this wonderful product. I do on a rareity have some wrinkling on the corners of the nails is this do to when I brush the tip with the color and then apply the color over the entire nail? does that make it to thick at the tip and corners? Thanks again looking forward to the release of the new colors!!!!
CND says:
June 21st, 2011 at 5:12 am
LaTonya,
Wrinkling is generally an indication of it being to thick which could lead to chipping or peeling. When you seal the edge, be sure to pull any excess product off the surface of the nail.
Thank You,
CND

I still have one of the first production of Cream Puff, and this particular color has issues. I love the Shellac, it’s been the greatest product for us natural nail manicurists. I just don’t agree with Creative for not admitting to the numerous problems with this particular color. it seems as if several people have had problems with this one color, and it seems to be brushed off with, just shake it, etc. My problem with this color has been that it was thick, straight from the beginning, and that it bubbles every time I take alcohol to it, todo my smile line for french manicures. I have bought a new smile line brush, and have yet to try it, but with my other try’s, I almost have the feeling, it’s so not worth my frustrations…
CND says:
July 1st, 2011 at 1:27 pm
Rachel,
The white really needed to be shaken more than some of the other colors, here is a video that may help you with thinner applications:
http://youtu.be/93j2yQ9oJ54
Also you might have more success cleaning up the smile line if you wipe the brush trough some alcohol, wipe it dry then clean the line, too much alcohol on the brush can cause the bubbling.
If you are having trouble getting the colors mixed well enough, I find a hobby paint shaker to be very helpful:

Hope these help!

I live off Shellac. I own a little Nail Shop and I have another manicurist that works with me. I do about 100 to 110 Shellac Manicure weekly. (you could ask Cosmoprof who are my distributor of the amount of supplies I buy weekly). I would like to know if CND is interested in recycling the bottles. I have TONS of them that of course always have a tiny bit in it but no longer works. Should I just throw them away?
I wanted to make a comment to the girl that said something about the white in the french. I use one coat of negligee, then I do the white line and then another coat of the negligee. It looks AWESOME! it kills the bright of the white and gives it a better smooth and even color to the french. My customers love it. I have noticed my Cream Puffs always get thicker faster than the other colors, would it be because I open it SO much, since I do so many french daily?
Why is CND only coming out with 6 colors in Fall? I thought it was going to be 12 like in March.
By the way, I will NEVER switch any of my customers from Shellac to Gelish. Gelish looks the same but is removed different and it destroys the nails just like acrylic. Shellac is more gentle on the nail. If a customer doesn’t want Shellac I will always suggest a regular or Spa manicure.
Thank you CND for your Shellac it has made my salon a piece of heaven for my customers.
CND says:
July 6th, 2011 at 4:20 pm
Thank you for the suggestion, it will be passed along for consideration.
Keep in mind that each color of Shellac is created as an individual chemical formula and therefore must be created, tested, and manufactured independently.

I have a client that is allergic to acrylics and gels but not shellac, which is great for her but we keep having the same issues with her nails!! She gets a bubble like affect under the shellac that eventually takes over the whole nail then they lift off cleanly!! She only is getting 8 days wear! I have noticed other comments on this blog pregnant clients saying lifts seem to be more common, even though my client is not pregnant but is going through menopause so I wonder if that may be contributing?? What do you think? We have done everything for her. We have been completed the CND Shellac course! Thanks Anita

How can i use shellac to make the Look clear?
Is there a transparent color or a Way to use only base and Top Coat? Can i use rinestones with it?
CND says:
August 14th, 2011 at 9:07 pm
Clear can be achieved by applying a layer of base coat followed by a layer of top coat. Another option would be to use Clearly Pink as the color, it is clear with just a tint of pink to it. Several technicians have had success placing gems in the Shellac.
