My manicurist complains of struggling with the curing of darker Shellac colours on the thumbs. I have had wrinkling on the thumbs every time I have had a dark colour applied. I am sure she is doing everything right, i.e. prepping the nails and curing for the right amount of time. Any advice?
Marqi,
It is safe, but I have found that with extremely young girls while it will last longer than polish it does not last 14 days due to their activities and habits.
Hanneri,
Wrinkling tends to be due to a too thick application of the Shellac.
Hi,
l have been using the rock royalty and have a problem with the tip peeling, following all instructions and doing thin layers. Should darker colure be cured for longer? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Hi. I have been using shellac for quite some time now and i absolutly love this product. My question is, do you have an “at-home” care sheet? If so, I am very interested so i can share this information with my guests. Also, do’s and don’ts at home. Thanks!
Donna,
Make sure that when you seal the edge you don’t leave a small ledge of thickness, also don’t go under the nail. Dark colors do not need to cure longer, they just need to be well mixed and applied thin, see if this video helps: http://youtu.be/4_E1hF5uWjI
Jackie,
There is not an official at home sheet, the main things they need to do is avoid chemical and water exposure by wearing gloves for cleaning and dishes, as well as conditioning the nails daily with Solar Oil.
I have had several clients shellac come off in a week or less while others will last 3 weeks. I don’t think it has anything to do w/ their activities because the ones that it lasts longer on, are harder on their nails. One client’s I did lasted for 3 weeks doing outside work, then when I took it off & put a new colour on it, the new colour only lasted a week (w/ no outside work). What would be the problem?
Lydia,
It could be the way they take care of them, using Solar Oil and wearing gloves when in chemicals can make a difference. Here is a helpful guide of Shellac tips that you may find useful: http://cnd.com/global/include/ShellacQuickTips.pdf
We are over joyed to have received our new Shellac CND system, but unfortunately the lamp has been back ordered and our representative sent us their alternative. Im having a problem having any of the layers cure under directed times. Any advice? We’ve already advertised this system so we cant, NOT, use it.
There is no alternative to the CND or Creative Nail Design lamp. Perhaps since the distributor felt that there was, they can troubleshoot the lamp that they have provided. If the lamp does not have a high enough UV output, it can not properly cure the Shellac which leads to service breakdown. Have you checked with other distributors for the availability of the lamp?
Regarding shellac over silk wraps, I see your initial response was that CND has not tested shellac over silk wraps. That was dated 11/13/10, have there been any updates regarding this issue. I have a chronic split nail that requires a wrap. I know that the shellac alone will not hold the split together. What do you recommend for this type of problem?
Kim,
This is still not a tested or approved process, however if you wish to attempt it at your own risk, there is a video by one of our educators: http://youtu.be/gorO1jMs-Mo
What would cause the polish to SHRINK on the nail. I polish the whole nail and then cure it and it does not reach the sides of the nail. We have also had a problem with the white rippling on a French. Can you use 3 coats of color polish. For an example I used Mascarade and then Negligee on top of it. The Mascarade was kind of see thru though and I would have liked it a truer color before I put the Negligee on top. You can’t use a think enough coat with 1 coat to get the desired look.
If the Shellac appears to be shrinking immediately after curing, make sure you are scrubbing the entire nail with your ScrubFresh, the base coat should be applied as carefully as a red, and that the Shellac is well shaken. You can use 3 coats of color as long as each one is applied thin and cured for 2 minutes.
I have clients coming in that have removed artificial nails and want the Shellac, the problem I’m having is they’re nails are rippled from drills and peeling form improper removal. I tell them they need to grow the nails our to where they are healthy, of course don’t want to. So I won’t guarantee that they will stay on for 2 weeks. Is there anything I can do to keep them from peeling in this situation??
Thank you
Another thing that is not CND endorsed but some techs have found it helpful is to place some fiberglass in the Shellac, here is a video: http://youtu.be/gorO1jMs-Mo
Hope this helps!

Which layers do i need if I only want natural nails (no french manicure). I need the basecoat and the topcoat. Instead of the 2 colorlayers, what should I use?
After a manicure I have my clients scrub their nails. I then apply scrub fresh twice. The base coat goes on perfect. When I apply the first coat of Romantique I can see it shrinking right away, that is before it even makes it into the gel light. What am I missing?
Responding to the message of September 8th:
if I want an extra layer (between the base and topcoat) because the nails are very thin, which extra colorless layer do I need?
Ive been using the Shellac polishes for about 2 months. Some of my older clients having been coming in regularly every 2wks. 4 of them have always had thin, weak nails that split. After using the shellac polishes, their nails are still in the same condition. Should i be using the shellac on their nails, or is there a product that I can put on before that will work with the system. What should i tell them and what should I do?
Thank you!
I have used this trick to repair the splits so that the split will grow out and the nail can then be normal under the Shellac, it does not change the removal time and you just re-apply as needed!
Are there any plans for a matte top coat in shellac? I think CND is ignoring a potentially growing market for men. I’m confident enough to not let the shiny layer bother me; I grown accustomed to it and no like it. Using this system combined with fiberglass wraps, I no longer have fingers bleeding from ripped nails.
Is anyone having trouble with the iced cappuccino? When I use the top coat over that color it wrinkles the color. That’s the only color I am having that problem with. Another girl in my salon is having the same problem. Any suggestions?
Over this last weekend, I had a client who needed a “fix” on her nail and was very hesitant to do one under the Schellac. I first used Bondini then Elegant glass fiberglass wrap. It wasn’t drying so I cured it under the U.V. light for 10 seconds. I then buffed a little and continued with the Schellac system, it was just as smooth as a normal nail and so far so good, I will let you know when she come back in next month.
I done 4 sets of shellac’s on some clients last night. On my fourth, I lost concentration and dispersed one hand after the 2nd colour coat thinking that it was the top coat. I then put the top coat on hoping that it would be ok. She has contacted me today saying that one hand isn’t shiny. Is the only solution now to remove the whole hand and start again?
Thanks in advance
You could attempt cleaning the nails well with D’sperse and then top coating again, however you might run into a peeling issue if everything is not sealed well.
Hope that helps!

I am horribly disappointed with Fedora. I have been going to the same nail person for over a year ~~ she knows what she is doing. Fedora is driving us both nuts. She has done everything possible and still it gets ridges and hat I can only call bubbles. No other colors do this for her. Asphalt does it a tiny bit but nothing like Fedora. It took 2.5 hours tonight for a Shellac manicure! If I were a morning appointment or anything other than last thing in the day, it would be a disaster. The only solution we can come up with is to toss the Fedora in the trash and hope another manufacturer comes up with a similar color in a different product. Otherwise very pleased with Shellac.
