  1. Abby,
What indications are you having that the top coat did not harden? Are you curing it in the CND lamp for 2 minutes?

  2. Is this safe and recomended for young girls ?

  3. My manicurist complains of struggling with the curing of darker Shellac colours on the thumbs. I have had wrinkling on the thumbs every time I have had a dark colour applied. I am sure she is doing everything right, i.e. prepping the nails and curing for the right amount of time. Any advice?

  4. Marqi,
It is safe, but I have found that with extremely young girls while it will last longer than polish it does not last 14 days due to their activities and habits.

    Hanneri,
Wrinkling tends to be due to a too thick application of the Shellac.

  5. Hi,
l have been using the rock royalty and have a problem with the tip peeling, following all instructions and doing thin layers. Should darker colure be cured for longer? Any advice greatly appreciated.

  6. Hi. I have been using shellac for quite some time now and i absolutly love this product. My question is, do you have an “at-home” care sheet? If so, I am very interested so i can share this information with my guests. Also, do’s and don’ts at home. Thanks!

  7. Donna,
Make sure that when you seal the edge you don’t leave a small ledge of thickness, also don’t go under the nail. Dark colors do not need to cure longer, they just need to be well mixed and applied thin, see if this video helps:

    Jackie,
There is not an official at home sheet, the main things they need to do is avoid chemical and water exposure by wearing gloves for cleaning and dishes, as well as conditioning the nails daily with Solar Oil.

I have had several clients shellac come off in a week or less while others will last 3 weeks. I don’t think it has anything to do w/ their activities because the ones that it lasts longer on, are harder on their nails. One client’s I did lasted for 3 weeks doing outside work, then when I took it off & put a new colour on it, the new colour only lasted a week (w/ no outside work). What would be the problem?

  9. We are over joyed to have received our new Shellac CND system, but unfortunately the lamp has been back ordered and our representative sent us their alternative. Im having a problem having any of the layers cure under directed times. Any advice? We’ve already advertised this system so we cant, NOT, use it.

    • There is no alternative to the CND or Creative Nail Design lamp. Perhaps since the distributor felt that there was, they can troubleshoot the lamp that they have provided. If the lamp does not have a high enough UV output, it can not properly cure the Shellac which leads to service breakdown. Have you checked with other distributors for the availability of the lamp?

      Thank You,
      CND

  10. Regarding shellac over silk wraps, I see your initial response was that CND has not tested shellac over silk wraps. That was dated 11/13/10, have there been any updates regarding this issue. I have a chronic split nail that requires a wrap. I know that the shellac alone will not hold the split together. What do you recommend for this type of problem?

  11. What would cause the polish to SHRINK on the nail. I polish the whole nail and then cure it and it does not reach the sides of the nail. We have also had a problem with the white rippling on a French. Can you use 3 coats of color polish. For an example I used Mascarade and then Negligee on top of it. The Mascarade was kind of see thru though and I would have liked it a truer color before I put the Negligee on top. You can’t use a think enough coat with 1 coat to get the desired look.

    • If the Shellac appears to be shrinking immediately after curing, make sure you are scrubbing the entire nail with your ScrubFresh, the base coat should be applied as carefully as a red, and that the Shellac is well shaken. You can use 3 coats of color as long as each one is applied thin and cured for 2 minutes.

      Thank You,
      CND

  12. any hints for doing a shellac pedicure?

  13. Do you have any hints on shellac pedicures?

  14. Does Shellac contain resin? clients who work in the OR are asking and we’re not sure. Thanks!

    • You can find a product profile and MSDS sheet to print for their review at cnd.com

I have clients coming in that have removed artificial nails and want the Shellac, the problem I’m having is they’re nails are rippled from drills and peeling form improper removal. I tell them they need to grow the nails our to where they are healthy, of course don’t want to. So I won’t guarantee that they will stay on for 2 weeks. Is there anything I can do to keep them from peeling in this situation??
    Thank you

  16. Which layers do i need if I only want natural nails (no french manicure). I need the basecoat and the topcoat. Instead of the 2 colorlayers, what should I use?

  17. What would cause the polish to ripple? I only have this problem with the Cream Puff white color.

    • Usually the wrinkling is from the Shellac being applied too thick, sometimes it is from needing to be shaken more.

      Thank You,
      CND

  18. I’ve started using shellac and have noticed they have chipped and peeled in a couple of days. Where am I going wrong?

    • Have you looked at the full detailed step by steps on CND.com to start the troubleshooting process?

      Thank You,
      CND

  19. After a manicure I have my clients scrub their nails. I then apply scrub fresh twice. The base coat goes on perfect. When I apply the first coat of Romantique I can see it shrinking right away, that is before it even makes it into the gel light. What am I missing?

    • That sounds like you may need to shake the Romantique harder and also check that you are ScrubFreshing the entire nail and not just the center.

      Thank You,
      CND

  20. Responding to the message of September 8th:
if I want an extra layer (between the base and topcoat) because the nails are very thin, which extra colorless layer do I need?

  21. Ive been using the Shellac polishes for about 2 months. Some of my older clients having been coming in regularly every 2wks. 4 of them have always had thin, weak nails that split. After using the shellac polishes, their nails are still in the same condition. Should i be using the shellac on their nails, or is there a product that I can put on before that will work with the system. What should i tell them and what should I do?
    Thank you!

  22. Are there any plans for a matte top coat in shellac? I think CND is ignoring a potentially growing market for men. I’m confident enough to not let the shiny layer bother me; I grown accustomed to it and no like it. Using this system combined with fiberglass wraps, I no longer have fingers bleeding from ripped nails.

    • CND offers Super Matte top coat which does last longer when worn over Shellac and can give you the versatility of shine or no shine!

      Thank You,
      CND

  23. Is anyone having trouble with the iced cappuccino? When I use the top coat over that color it wrinkles the color. That’s the only color I am having that problem with. Another girl in my salon is having the same problem. Any suggestions?

  24. Over this last weekend, I had a client who needed a “fix” on her nail and was very hesitant to do one under the Schellac. I first used Bondini then Elegant glass fiberglass wrap. It wasn’t drying so I cured it under the U.V. light for 10 seconds. I then buffed a little and continued with the Schellac system, it was just as smooth as a normal nail and so far so good, I will let you know when she come back in next month.

  25. I done 4 sets of shellac’s on some clients last night. On my fourth, I lost concentration and dispersed one hand after the 2nd colour coat thinking that it was the top coat. I then put the top coat on hoping that it would be ok. She has contacted me today saying that one hand isn’t shiny. Is the only solution now to remove the whole hand and start again?
    Thanks in advance

    • You could attempt cleaning the nails well with D’sperse and then top coating again, however you might run into a peeling issue if everything is not sealed well.

      Hope that helps!

  26. After I apply the base coat and cure it for the 10 seconds, it is sticky. Is the base coat supposed to be sticky after being under the light?

    • All the layers will be tacky as you work. For full detailed step by steps please visit cnd.com

  27. I am horribly disappointed with Fedora. I have been going to the same nail person for over a year ~~ she knows what she is doing. Fedora is driving us both nuts. She has done everything possible and still it gets ridges and hat I can only call bubbles. No other colors do this for her. Asphalt does it a tiny bit but nothing like Fedora. It took 2.5 hours tonight for a Shellac manicure! If I were a morning appointment or anything other than last thing in the day, it would be a disaster. The only solution we can come up with is to toss the Fedora in the trash and hope another manufacturer comes up with a similar color in a different product. Otherwise very pleased with Shellac.

  28. Question…..I have a client whose nails almost always crack around the smile line. She has been using shellac and is trying to get them to grow longer. Is it something I am doing or missing? or is it something else?

    • That is also the stress area, make sure the nails are the appropriate length for the clients activity and that the nails are treated as jewels not tools. Solar Oil should be used daily to help improve flexibility.

      Thank You,
      CND

Is there a CND color that’s close to the CND tutu?

  30. Does anyone have an issue with the thumbs “waving” during the curing process?

  31. I am having a problem with the Shellac peeling within a couple of days. The first time I did the process, they came out perfect. The last 2 times they have peeled. What am I doing wrong?

  32. Decided i might want to try out nail art on shellac, but allready did the system on my nails. Do i have to start over or can i start after i cured the top coat and how?

    • You can apply nail art after application, just use regular polish top coat to protect your art.

      Thank you,

What does CND think about the damning article in Good Housekeeping, March 2012? It talks about the dangers of Gel manicures and that one of its ingredients may cause reproductive harm and is included on California’s Proposition 65 list of toxic chemicals

    • As of August 2011, CND Shellac does not contain the chemical Methyl Pyrrolidone (n-MP). Prior to that, several original CND Shellac color formulations used a raw material that contained trace amounts of n-MP in the solvent. The amount of n-MP in the final formula was below 0.1%, well within safe harbor limits of California’s Prop 65.

Is there a color chart for Shellac?

  35. I have a client who has had some nails break a couple days after applying the shellac. Is there something I could be doing to prevent this? Her free edge is not real short but not too long where you would worry about them breaking a lot. She also has fairly healthy nails, no flaking.

    • Make sure she is using Solar Oil 2-3 times a day, not using her nails as tools, and wearing gloves when doing dishes or household chores.

      Thank you,
      CND

  36. I am wondering about Debra’s question too and why CND hasn’t answered the question yet.

  37. it says you can layer over shellac with additives pigments and sparkle effect to create nail art. I was wondering how I need a demo please. thanks

  38. I had a client go on vacation and got in the hot tub and her pedicure came off that night. Then the next day her shellac came off also.. is there some type of chemical that would make that happen or what?? I’m a little confused on why the shellac would come off like that. Has anyone else had that happen or know why??

    • Shellac is unique compared to competitive color coatings. Many come in permanent options (colored gels) and semi-permanent options (colored soft gels or “soakable” gels and Liquid and Powder), but these technologies are all nail enhancements, requiring time, skilled application techniques, maintenance and additional time required for potentially damaging removal.

Shellac is formulated with Acetone Soluble Polymers (tiny tunnels) making it removable in 10 minutes with pure acetone. These tiny tunnels allow the acetone to travel all the way down through the coating and finally down to the base layer where the acetone breaks down the “quick-release” polymers releasing Shellac from the natural nail without the use of files or buffers which can be extremely damaging to the natural nail.

These tiny tunnels also make Shellac less chemically resistant than gels, liquid & powders or other enhancement products. Thus exposure to household chemicals including chlorine can affect Shellac wear. Clients that regularly swim or soak in Jacuzzis may not experience 14+ day wear with Shellac. However they should experience longer wear with Shellac than polish.

      Thank you,
      CND

  39. Just curious if there is an expected shelf life for a bottle of CND shellac color polish? There are many different sources to buy this product and at different prices. I am just curious if some of the cheaper sources have older bottles of polish they are trying to get rid of or would all seller’s have current stock? I am speaking of nail supply stores who sell through Amazon….not ebay. Thoughts?

    • Shellac has a shelf life of two years when unopened. Amazon is not an official distributor for CND products. For a list of professional distributors in your area please visit cnd.com

  40. My manicurist has used CND three times on me…two out of the three times have not need to great. The first time I had a sparkly dark red that looked great and I didn’t have any problems with it. Then I had Fedora done and it bubbled and my nails felt very soft and they hurt if you pushed on them. My manicurist and I thought this was a fluke since she did everything she was supposed to, so I used a solid dark red and my nails feel soft AGAIN no bubbling but they hurt a little. My manicurist did everything the same, why do I seem to have trouble with your solid colors vs. your sparkly colors. This is costing my manicurist time and money to have to redo my nails, she has not had this issue with any of her other clients that she’s used these colors on. What can the problem be?

    • This sounds like something that would need more information to help troubleshoot. Please have her call the hotline at 800-833-NAIL to provide more information and chat with a tech on ideas.

Can you only use shellac on natural nails? Can you use shellac over acrylic nails if the client is letting the acrylic grow off their nails?

  42. Hi,
Will chlorine ( sitting in hot tub or pool) or the salt water from the ocean affect the shellac? Would love to do this before I go on vacation! Thanks.

    • Shellac is the first ever professional UV-cured color coat system that features UV3 technology:
      • On like polish
      • Wears like gel
      • Off in minutes

Shellac is unique compared to competitive color coatings. 43. Hi
When removing shellac polish with acetone, it leaves my clients nails rough and the top layer peeling. They then wish me to re-shellac. This, however, leaves unsightly bumps! Should I buff the nails prior to a further application?
    Thank you.

  44. Why are my nails taking so long to dry.? I just got my shellac polish and I was so excited but I am having a problem with the drying. I followed the directions that the nail tech told me since the machine didn’t come with instructions. What am I doing wrong?

    • Shellac is a line designed for professional salon use. If purchased though a professional distributor, information and instructions should be available from them as well as on our website.

      Thank you,
      CND
