Love this product, but you really need to come up with a thiner, A lot of product is waisted as it does dry out and get thicker in the bottle with use, Because of the price of each color and the small amount of color you get I need to use every drop.

    • Lisa,

Each color of Shellac is specifically formulated to apply smoothly, cure completely, wear for 14 days and remove in 10 minutes. In order to achieve all of these goals, each color has a different formula that is made up of its own unique blend of many different materials, including up to four different solvents. As you apply Shellac, those solvents will begin to evaporate off, which is why over time, you may notice that your Shellac begins to feel thicker during application. We have formulated each color with this in mind, so even if it does feel a little thicker it will still cure, wear, and remove as it is intended. However, there are practices that will speed up the evaporation of these solvents and can cause faster thickening of Shellac.

      These include:

      • Not tightening the cap properly in between applications
      • Not replacing the cap during or between applications
      • Exposing the open bottle to light
      • Overworking the Shellac (like pumping the brush in and out of a mascara tube)
      • Warming the bottle above room temperature

Unfortunately, these are all mistakes that cannot be undone. Contrary to some comments and suggestions that we have seen, there is no safe and effective way to make Shellac thinner once it has thickened.

      Thank you

    2 Questions:
Do you need to shake the Shellac top coat. It seems to get tiny bubbles if you do.
The frosted colors seem to have problems curing properly even if shaken well. When you apply the tip coat over them it pulls the product as if it did not cure all the way?

  3. I absolutely love this product. This polish is so easy that I can do it myself and wears well. I cannot say enough about how great this product is. Thanks CND

  4. Brenda,
It stays a better consistency if shaken, I shake it while the client is in remover wraps and there are not usually any bubbles by application time.

  5. Is there an exact shelf life for the product

  6. is it a must to use the UV nail dryer after putting on the shellac nails or can you use a blow dryer or something else to dry them?

  7. Debbie Ostrander says:

I have been having a problem too with bubbles that seem to show up after curing. I cannot find a way to get rid of them.

  8. I think it would be a good idea to put the mixing balls in the colors and top coat of shellac as you have it in the base coat already.

    • Lori,

There are mixing beads in the colors. You may not be able to hear them but they are there.

      Thank you

  9. Leave the bottle soak in hot water for 5 minutes before use if it is a little thick. Works perfectly, also helps you get out those drops in the corners of the bottle!

  10. I am having problems with the white when
I do a french look. The white chips off. It is
the only color that I am having problems with.

  11. Robin,
Two years un-open, one year open.

    Mel,
A CND UV Lamp is essential to the success of Shellac application.

    Debbie,
You may find this troubleshooting video helpful:

Bubbles tend to actually be cuticle remnants, fuzzies trapped, or a thick application.

    Sherry,

  12. I am wondering did you clean the smile line with a brush which dipped in alcohol or acetone. I have some clients which are nail techs did that and it caused the chipping on the white.

  13. Thee wasn’t an answer to the question I have too-Is a UV light essential?

  14. Mary Anne Collura says:

I have clients that wear the color shellac. And some of them are having problems with white spots on their nails. But when I put the french manicure it dose not do it.

  15. I have had some clients who had one nail peel. Why is it doing that? I’m doing everything you are supposed to do for prep. And I’m using a creative nail pro-finish uv lamp is that a good lamp to use with shellac?

  16. I love applying Shellac. and our clients love it….just one question from a nail tech’s perspective…..sometimes our spa smells strongly from the Shellac odors. We do have a ventilation system…but not the best. Is Shellac relatively safe to breathe from a health standpoint? Our spa does not do acrylics, regular gels, etc….only regular manis, pedis and Shellac services so we are not use to the stronger fumes…..just wondering if it’s safe for us? Many thanks.

  17. Is there a way to “fill” a shellac manicure?

  18. What would cause particles in the basecoat?

  19. T. Bowman says:

    May 25th, 2011 at 1:30 pm

I love, love, love shellac. The only problem – not enough colors. I was so excited when the new ones just came out and they are so
boring. Summer colors are bold and bright and the new ones are either pale or look like winter colors. When I get my manucure I can never decide on a color because I don’t wear light pinks and beige. Give us some pretty colors.

  20. The appearance of particles in the base coat tends to be cuticle remnant or small fuzzies, if you have shaken the base coat andcan apply it to a cean tip and still see the particles, please call the hotline 800-833-NAIL

    Mary Anne,
Please walk me through your steps for application and removal.

  21. Bowman,
Have you seen the layering? 1 coat of Cream Puff followed by 1 coat of Hot Pop Pink or even Hot Chilis makes a bright pink!

Here are some photos of layering options:

    Monica,
Shellac is a power polish, you would not fill polish, right?

  22. Is it possible to purchase the tray from the new Shellac light only?

  23. Lori,
No it is not, however if yours has befallen a peril of some sort you might try the hotline 800-833-NAIL.

  24. Annmarie,
Shellac is 3-free, which means it does not have DBP, Tolulene, and Formaldehyde.

    Mel,
If you are using the pro-finish lamp then your Shellac is not properly cured and can easily chip or peel. You will love the difference a CND UV Lamp will make!!

  26. Why is Shellac being sold to non-professionals on Amazon.com?

    • Professionals are purchasing it and choosing to resell on sites like ebay and amazon. CND does not condone this.

      Thank you,
      CND

  27. That is a wonderful accomplishment to be featured in Oprah’s magazine! My hat is off to you! I love also all of the nail world education found here! Super! Fonda

  28. Hi, In my town a shellac manicure costs $40.00. After 14 days, they need another $40.00 shellac manicure, is this correct? Shellac is great, but for keeping this look up, it costs $80.00 a month, is this correct? Thank you!

    • Kristy,
That could easily be correct. The price and service is going to vary from salon to salon.

      Thank You,
      CND

  29. I’m looking to purchase a new nail table. Can I purchase one that has the UV lights built into the table instead of using the CND lamp. Wouldn’t it be the same thing? The ads say it cures gel nails so I’m assuming this type of light would work also on the Shellac?

    • Sadie,
For the proper cure of Shellac, you need the CND lamp to be assured of getting the correct UV output.

      Thank You,
      CND

It has been a year since shellac came out and I am still unable to get a lamp. What else can we do? No supplier seems to be able to get the lamps.

    • Brenda,
There are several distributors that do have lamps available, please visit cnd.com to find a list of distributors. If you are planning to attend a show such as IBS in Vegas, check for lamps there as well.

      Thank You,

  31. Hello! I am from Russia. Shellac brand is very currently here. I would like to make an order of this product. But I don’t know how to do it. Would you tell me how to make an order from manufacturer or an official dealer in America?

    • Pasha,
CND does have a distributor in Russia for nail professionals, please visit cnd.com to get distributor information.

      Thank You,

  32. Has any body else noticing a connection with peeling and the use of sunblock?? I know it sounds funny, but my clients have had more peeling all of the sudden with the warm weather and the only thing they are doing differently is wearing sunblock! Any comments??

  33. Holly L Schippers says:

    June 15th, 2011 at 7:31 pm

    Brenda,
Try some of the larger mail order distributors to get a lamp, goblondies.com or Industry Source are a few I have seen mentioned.

    Laura,
Some sunscreens can work through the tiny tunnels and cause issues. You might try having them apply Solar Oil to the nails to help block out the sunscreen and advise them to keep it off the nails as much as possible. Sunscreen combined with chlorine can also cause trouble as well.

  34. help I love shellac and have tripled my clientele with the product.I have clients who have been using it for about 3 months and their nails have saed breaking in the quick. Is it not using oil and the nails are drying out and getting brittle? They say they keep forgeting to use the oil.But I understand and know hat the acetone is very toxic to the nail

    • Holly L Schippers says:

      June 17th, 2011 at 2:28 pm

      Stacie,
Acetone is not toxic to the nail, it can just be drying. If the nails are breaking check into a few things: make sure you are not buffing the nails, they must use oil (ask them to imagine what their hair would look like if they didn’t condition between color services), do no soak in a bowl of acetone to remove Shellac – be sure to wrap the nails, and make sure they are not wearing them too long for the activities and/or job(s) that they do.

Am really disappointed with Creative formation capsules which seem to have half the thickness to before. They split and break all the time. I have been using them for 20 years and now something has changed in the manufacturing process. Creative say that they have been improved, sadly the effect is the opposite. Almost everyday I have to redo split nails. Can you not go back to old process please? In the long run you are going to lose clients. Many thanks for your understanding. Regards.

    • The tip actually have improved, they are more flexible and easier to blend. Make sure you are not getting ScrubFresh on the tip, keep it targeted to the natural nail. You may also want to check that your tip cutter blade is not dull.

      Thank You,
      CND

  37. Hi here,
I use shellac for a year now and really love it!
I just had one as a gift (clearly pink) and realized the box and the top of the bottle was different. Did you change the rubber touch top to simple plastic and the plastic box to cardboard? Or I maybe have a fake one? It seems perfect otherwise, everything is the same as normal, and even works well. Thanks, Helga

    • The packaging was changed to expedite the processing and shipping times on Shellac.

      Thank You,

  38. What causes the nail to yellow When I do French shellac?

    • Holly L Schippers says:

      June 28th, 2011 at 10:29 am

Jenny is the natural nail yellow or the Shellac itself?

  39. I like the french manicure – shellec but have noted the white at times turns dark or has a tarnished look. It appears it has a chemical reaction to something but not sure what is going on. Any ideas?

    • Shellac is formulated with Acetone Soluble Polymers (tiny tunnels) making it removable in 10 minutes. These tiny tunnels also make Shellac less chemically resistant than gels, liquid & powders or other enhancement products. This can allow things like the dye in clothing, gloves, sheets, etc to stain the white. If it is a problem on a particular client sometimes two coats of topcoat can lessen the staining.

      Thank You,
      CND

  40. I have a client who spent the day at the beach. The shellac has been on her nails 2 weeks and it all peeled off after day at the beach. Can it be the sunscreen she is using? The ends of her nails turned yellow also
    Thankyou
    Stacie

    • It can be a combination of the sunscreen, sun, and water working together. Shellac is formulated with Acetone Soluble Polymers (tiny tunnels) making it removable in 10 minutes. These tiny tunnels also make Shellac less chemically resistant than gels, liquid & powders or other enhancement products.

      Thank You,

  41. Help I bought the shellac system today and my nails are “gummy” will not cure … What THE? i left each layer on 3 min instead of 2 like a post said earlier BUT now they r not dry. What happened?

  42. Why does basecoat bubble? No matter what I do, it still will. I completely prep the nail.

    • TeLisa,
Make sure you are applying it very, very thin and then scrubbing the nail thoroughly with ScrubFresh.

      Thank You,

Why am I losing clients bc they can buy this system on line with no license? Had 3 people tell me they got the system on amazon… What makes this such a professional service then?

    • Unfortunately some professionals are choosing to sell to consumers, CND does not condone this and is doing as much as possible to try and combat it.

      Apologies,

At the spa and salon I work at we have been having problems over the past 3 weeks that we never had before, and are wondering what or why
    1) When doing a french the white tip is getting bubbly
–Could it be because the white is to thick?
    2) We have had regular clients complaining that is it not lasting as long and peeling off within a week of less of application

Would greatly appreciate some advise to fix the problem

    Thank you

    1) It has been peeling off within days of getting it
    2) whe doing the french the white tip is getting bubbly

Any tips on how to help avoid these problems

    • Amanda,
This sounds like an under curing issue, if you are using the CND UV Lamp check your bulb life, instructions came with the lamp and are also available at cnd.com
